For the longest time I thought this book is a tie-in for Hayao Miyazaki's great anime. So I didn't give it even the slightest attention. Only recently have I found out that it's actually the book which the movie based on, even then I still hesitated. Now, though, I'm really glad I read it and I'm glad I saw the anime first. This book told the story as a whole, I found out and understood more things in it that the anime understandably could only highlight and insinuate. It showed Howl and Sophie's character more clearly and finally showed me how the scene with moving Calcifer from his hearth really was (I thought that scene in the anime really senseless and confusing) I still love Hayao Miyasaki's animes and will definitely keep on watching them, but had I read the book first I would've very dissapointed with the anime.
